|Gila Martow, MPP - Thornhill|
Gila Martow. Your voice in Thornhill.
Gila Martow was first elected into the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in February 2014. Since the 2014 Provincial General Election in June, Gila is now embarking on her second consecutive term as the elected Member of Provincial Parliament for the Thornhill riding.
Prior to taking office, Gila graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in optometry and moved to Thornhill in 1989. She has been a practicing optometrist for over 25 years and co-ran an eye clinic affiliated with Markham Stouffville Hospital with her husband, Jeff.
As a mother of four, Gila is dedicated to making York Region the best place to live, work, and play for our future generations. To that effect, Gila is an active member of her community serving as the past Chair of the Parents Association of TanenbaumCHAT York Region Campus and also advocating for local not-for-profit organizations such as York Region’s CNIB and Hadassah.
As MPP, Gila has devoted her efforts to addressing the problems that residents face in Thornhill. Shortly after being elected to office in February 2014, Gila introduced Bill 181 with the purpose of improving traffic flow and reducing gridlock, an issue that affects a vast population in the York Region. Through her roles as GTA Issues Critic, Francophone Affairs Critic, and Intergovernmental Affairs Critic, Gila will continue to be the voice for the Ontario PC and the residents of Thornhill.
Francophone Affairs Critic
The Office of Francophone Affairs in Ontario is responsible for the provision of government services to Franco-Ontarian citizens and communities. As a previous resident of Montreal, Gila is very attentive to the needs of the Francophone community.
Through this position, Gila is dedicated to assuring that the provincial government will provide the necessary services in French and ensure that Francophones can participate socially, economically and politically in Ontario, while maintaining their linguistic and cultural heritage.
GTA Issues Critic
The Greater Toronto Area, GTA, is comprised of four regional municipalities: Durham, Halton, Peel, and York with a population of over 6 million people. As GTA Issues Critic, Gila will assess the actions and policies regarding issues impacting the GTA including highway and traffic laws, health, transportation, amongst others.
The wide scope of this role ensures that Gila will be in constant contact with ministries across Ontario in addition to coordinating with other critics from the PC party to best address the issues in the GTA.
